over 55's to pensioner travelers

What is over 50’s travel insurance and do I need it?

Don’t risk of paying tens of thousands of pounds for emergency medical treatment if you become unwell and need hospital treatment while you’re abroad when a good travel insurance policy could take care of all of that for you.

Use our guides to find a competitive holiday insurance quote and discover the travel insurers that work with people over 50, those aged 65 or at pension age or elderly customers. Learn how to get travel insurance even if you have pre existing medical conditions.

  • 28% of all customers who bought their travel insurance policy in 2018 were over 55.

  • The Foreign office claims that 1 in 10 over 55’s don’t always take out travel insurance when travelling abroad.

  • As most holidaymakers over the age of 55 take at least two holidays per year away from the UK, 38% decide to choose annual cover. In 2019, 17% of retired holidaymakers over 70 would like to, or are planning a long stay journey, some for up to a year abroad.

  • Use our comparison tables below and Compare various rates and levels of cover so your travels are as worry-free as possible.

The advantages of being an older traveller, with a minor caveat…

Being able to travel in your stride without the responsibility of children in your later years can be the time of your life.

There are almost no disadvantages with age, except the cost of increasing travel insurance premiums. From the age of 50 and over, you might face steep increases in price for pre-existing medical conditions.

And this isn’t just for travellers at retirement age. From the age of 40 you might experience an incremental price hike where premiums can go up every 10, or even five years. But once you reach 65, some companies won’t insure you at all.

So, for example, the cost of Columbus Direct’s Silver Single Trip policy covering a week’s holiday in Europe can go up as much as 5 times between the ages of age 65 or under to age 80 to 85.

Get the low down on the right travel insurance – from how it works, to what pre-existing medical conditions can be covered, and finally – how to get a quote that is right for you and your partner.

Travel and holiday insurance explained

Travel insurance is designed to cover unexpected problems while travelling abroad and when you’re on holiday. Travelling without cover is very risky and could leave you out of pocket if the unthinkable happens. But what are the features of an over 50’s, over 60’s or over 70’s travel insurance policy?

More than 70% of claims in the over 50’s age range are the result of medical issues that led to a trip cancellation, or to needing medical attention while abroad, and fewer than one of every ten claims is to do with baggage or money. So, check the medical cover offered carefully. Loss of medicines while abroad, for example, can be a lifesaving feature.

Here are the basics you need to expect from your policy provider before you buy.

  • Your medical expenses. All policies should cover towards any cost of emergency medical and surgical treatment while you are away. A good over 50 travel insurance policy will give £1 million or more for travel to Europe, or £2 million or more for travel to the USA. Any treatment which can wait until you return home (according to the opinion of a doctor) would not normally be covered.

  • Getting you back home.

Repatriation service cover should be provided for the cost of emergency repatriation (for medical reasons) back to the UK.

  • Cancellation or Curtailment cover.

If you have to cancel or shorten your trip, this covers you for any travel and accommodation costs you have paid and can’t use or claim back and should pay out £2,000 or more. Policies will only cover cancellations in certain circumstances, so always check the terms and conditions of your policy.

  • Missed departure, delay or travel abandonment.

Your policy should cover you in case of a missed departure, delay or travel abandonment. If additional accommodation or travel expenses are incurred if you miss your departure flight, boat or train due to situations outside of your control such as your car breaking down or being involved in an accident or public transport being delayed. There are separate stipulations for delay, for the first 12 hours you’re delayed and then longer if it’s a particularly lengthy delay.

  • Baggage cover.

If your baggage is lost, most policies cover your possessions for around £1500.

  • Annual or single trip insurance

Are you going on a long trip? Do you have lots of holiday plans this year? Consider getting an annual policy rather than the single trip insurance as the savings can be significant.

What to look out for: “must have” features for travel emergencies

When you’re purchasing travel insurance, it’s important to disclose all pre-existing illnesses for which you have received treatment. If there’s an emergency, you need to know you’re covered.

If you suffer from a specific pre-existing illness, mainstream travel insurers may charge a higher premium to cover you or explicitly deny you coverage for claims related to those factors on your holiday.

Naturally, there are specialist insurers who can help. We’ve looked at the “must have” features, and prices offered to travellers with high blood pressure, diabetes, breast cancer or heart disease.

  • £2m to £15m worldwide medical cover

All policy providers are different – make sure they offer at least £2m (Europe) or £5m (worldwide) worth of medical cover. Some offer up to £15m worth of cover.

  • Air ambulance and baggage cover

Check whether your policy includes include air ambulance cover and how much cover is provided for any baggage, personal belongings or cash lost if you fall ill.

Repatriation back to the UK is key – you should make sure that, if there’s an emergency your repatriation expenses are covered.

  • Cancellation, emergency assistance, legal cover

You should look out for around £3,000 for cancellation and curtailment, and a minimum of £1m of personal liability cover.

  • 24 hour emergency assistance

Most insurers offer a 24-hour emergency helpline that you can call for urgent advice include access to medical professionals on the telephone.

  • High severity illnesses and terminal prognosis

As much as we hate to think about these things, cover for pre-existing medical conditions can include receiving a terminal prognosis while on holiday such as Cancer or critical illnesses that need major surgery immediately.
